Successful applicants will participate in two ongoing and productive investigations: (1) Determine how noise generated by chemical synapses alters visual sensitivity (2) Find principles of retinal design that limit noise. Laboratory is multidisciplinary, offering the following techniques: whole cell recording from transgenic mouse retina; multielectrode recordings; theoretical methods based on Bayes' and Claude Shannon's insights; two-photon and confocal microscopy; computational models incorporating the fine structure of the retinal circuit. Position is for a least 3 years, with salary according to NIH guidelines ($39,264 first year after doctorate). AA/EOE
