Adelson, E. H. (1993) Perceptual organization and the judgment of brightness. Science 262: 2042-2044
Adelson's work involves diamond shaped patterns such as those shown below.
Adelson's Figure 2a. The diamonds have the same physical reflectance but appear to have different brightness. A 35% perceived difference was found.
- Brightness - the apparent luminance of a patch in an image.
- Lightness - apparent reflectance of a perceived surface.
the perceived light level of a patch relative to other patches in the same image.
My own figure which has the diamonds aligned. The effect seems smaller and the percept of a transparent filter is absent.
