This variety of horizontal cell was introduced by Kolb, Linberg and Fisher (1992). It is intimately related to the HI. In their own words, "HIII, introduced here, has been separated from the HI type on morphological criteria of having a larger, more asymmetrical dendritic field and in contacting 30% more cones than the HI at any point on the retina."
